Year of death: September 24, 1722 (November 2, 1722) Year of birth: 1650 (Keian 3) A haiku poet of the early Edo period. Born in Nara. It is said that his haiku was the work of Matsue Shigeyori, but his name does not appear in Shigeyori's anthologies. He went to Edo in his late 20s and became active as a haiku poet of the Danrin school, establishing a firm position in the Edo haiku world. At the time, he was a cutting-edge haiku poet who pursued the new trends of the times. In the spring of Tenna 2 (1682) at the age of 33, he moved to Kyoto, and traveled to Hokuetsu, Oshu, Kyushu, and other areas, and after settling in Kyoto, he became one of the leading haiku poets in the Kyoto haiku world. The haiku poet review book "Hanamiguruma" ranks him at the rank of tayu and describes him as "a man of keen eyes." As this review suggests, he was sensitive to the trends of the times, and he also dabbled in miscellaneous haiku such as maeku-tsuke and kasa-tsuke, which became popular during the Genroku period (1688-1704). The story of how the poem "The fruit of the cold wind is the sound of the sea" became popular and came to be called "Kogarashi no Gensui" ("The cold wind and the sound of the sea") is well known. <References> Kiyoshi Ogino, "Genroku Meika Kushu"; Yoshifumi Uki, "Ikenishi Gensui Nenpu" ("Renga Haikai Kenkyu" No. 62) (Yoshinobu Tanaka) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
