A city in central Saitama prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It is made up of part of the Hiki Hills and a plateau, with the Tsuki River and Ichino River flowing southeast. In the early modern period, it developed as a post town and market town on a side road. The Tobu Tojo Line and the Kan'etsu Expressway run through the city. Industrialization progressed after an automobile parts factory moved in in 1939, and an industrial complex was also built, with the automobile parts industry accounting for about 50% of the city's manufactured goods shipment value (2003). There has been a remarkable shift to residential areas, with the development of Takasaka New Town and the population increasing since 1990.
