… Some hawk moths are well known as migratory moths that fly long distances, and about one third of the 23 species recorded from the UK mainland are epidemic moths that fly in from Africa every year, sometimes temporarily disappearing after one or two generations. Even in Japan, only two specimens of the Japanese bush warbler have been collected on Okinoerabujima, and the red-banded hawk moth has only been collected sporadically, making its indigenous status doubtful. The oleander moth, whose larvae feed on oleander, is famous for flying from Africa to Europe every year, but it is distributed as far as Southeast Asia and has been indigenous to the main island of Okinawa since 1976. …
