One of the major battles of World War II. In North Africa, the Axis (German and Italian) forces under the command of Rommel advanced from the west toward the British colony of Egypt. The British 8th Army, which had suffered a series of defeats, was reorganized under General Montgomery and first defeated the Axis forces at the Battle of Alam Farfa in late August 1942. Then, on the night of October 23, taking advantage of the full moon, they attacked Axis positions near El Alamein, and after fierce fighting, they finally broke through on November 4, winning a decisive victory.
