Neri, Filippo
Born: July 21, 1515, Florence
Died May 26, 1595. A Roman Italian religious leader. One of the leading figures in the Counter-Reformation movement. After his conversion, he went to Rome, where he studied philosophy and theology while working as a private tutor, and in 1548 founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Trinity for Charity. In 1551 he became a priest and settled in the Basilica of San Girolamo della Carita, where he met with young people in his room. As the number of attendees increased, the meeting place was moved to the attic of the church, which they called the Oratorium. These meetings developed into the Congregation of the Oratorio, and the music sung there became the oratorio. In 1675, Pope Gregory XIII gave the congregation the site of the Santa Maria Church, and the congregation was founded. In 1677, Neri was elected general superior. Canonized in 1622 (feast day May 26). Patron saint of humorists.

A 17th-century Italian glass artist from Florence, famous for his L'Arte Vetraria (1612) (How to Make Glass). He worked in glassmaking in Pisa for many years and is said to have been familiar with Venetian glass techniques. This book was translated into many European languages ​​and made a major contribution as a fundamental text for European glassmaking. In Japan, a portion of it was translated by Baba Sajuro into his Collected Glass Methods (1810), and it became an important reference book for glassmaking in the Edo period.

イタリアの宗教家。対抗宗教改革運動の代表的人物の一人。回心ののちローマに出て,家庭教師をしつつ哲学,神学を学び,1548年慈善のための三位一体信心会を設立。 51年司祭となってサン・ジロラモ・デラ・カリタ聖堂に定住,自室で若者との会合をもった。参会者がふえ,会場は教会の屋根裏部屋に移され,彼らはそこをオラトリウムと呼んだ。この会合が発展してオラトリオ会となり,そこで歌われていた音楽がオラトリオとなった。 75年グレゴリウス 13世よりサンタ・マリア教会跡を与えられ,会が創立され 77年ネリは総会長に選出された。 1622年列聖 (祝日 5.26.) 。ユーモリストの保護聖人。

17世紀イタリアのガラス工芸家。フィレンツェの人。『ガラス製造法』L'Arte Vetraria (1612) の著者として有名。ピサで長くガラスの製造にたずさわり,ベネチア・ガラスの技法にも通じていたといわれる。この書はヨーロッパ各国語に翻訳され,ヨーロッパ・ガラス工芸の基本的原典として大きく貢献した。日本でも馬場佐十郎によって『硝子製法集説』 (1810) のなかにその一部が訳出され,江戸期のガラス工芸の重要な参考書とされた。
