…From this point on, prehistoric archaeology developed its own methods, taking many cues from natural science. French customs official J. Boucher de Perthes, who knew the geological law that layers of earth are deposited in succession from bottom to top, noticed that bones of extinct mammals and crude stone tools were found in the same layer in the bed of the Somme River, and claimed that the origins of mankind date back to a very ancient time. This theory was initially met with much opposition, but was endorsed by authorities such as J. Evans at a conference in 1859. …
