A republic in the southwest of the Russian Federation, in the North Caucasus. The Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (Checheno-Ingushskaya ASSR) under the former Soviet Union separated into the Chechen Republic (regional name Chechnya) and the Republic of Ingushetia in the early 1990s.
