Chechnya (Republic)

A republic in the southwest of the Russian Federation, in the North Caucasus. The Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (Checheno-Ingushskaya ASSR) under the former Soviet Union separated into the Chechen Republic (regional name Chechnya) and the Republic of Ingushetia in the early 1990s. The combined region is called Checheno-Ingushetiya, with an area of 19,300 km2 and a population of 1.27 million (as of 1989).
