The caryopses of barley (six-rowed barley) and two-rowed barley are surrounded by the outer and inner caryopses. Of these, barley whose inner and outer caryopses remain attached to the caryopses even after they are fully ripe is called hulled barley, while barley whose caryopses can be easily removed from the inner and outer caryopses after they are fully ripe and dried is called naked barley (previously called hull-less barley). Barley with properties intermediate between the two is called semi-naked barley. In hulled barley, the inner and outer caryopses adhere to the caryopses during ripening due to a secretion from the surface of the caryopses (the ovary wall).
