A salt of metatungstic acid, one of the polytungstic acids formed by condensation of tungstic acid. The general formula is M ^I ₆ [H ₂ W ₁₂ O ₄₀ ]･ n H ₂ O (it can also be written as M ^I ₂ O･4WO ₃ ･ n H ₂ O). In the past, it was written as M ^I ₁₀ [H ₂ (W ₂ O ₇ ) ₆ ]. M ^I ₃ [W ₆ O ₂₁ ], which has the same composition, is sometimes called pseudometungstate. Most are colorless, water-soluble crystals. Aqueous solutions tend to crystallize when cooled, and become syrup-like when concentrated. Ammonium salts and alkali metal salts are easily soluble in water, while lead(II) salts and mercury(II) salts are extremely insoluble.

タングステン酸が縮合してできるポリタングステン酸の一つのメタタングステン酸の塩。一般式M^I₆[H₂W₁₂O₄₀]･nH₂O(M^I₂O･4WO₃･nH₂Oとも書ける)。古くはM^I₁₀[H₂(W₂O₇)₆]のように書かれたこともある。同じ組成のM^I₃[W₆O₂₁]を擬メタタングステン酸塩と呼ぶこともある。多く無色の，水に可溶の結晶。水溶液は冷却すると結晶しやすく，濃縮するとシロップ状になる。アンモニウム塩，アルカリ金属塩などは水に易溶，鉛(II)塩，水銀(II)塩などはきわめて難溶である。
