Garter (English spelling)

Japanese: ガーター(英語表記)garter
Garter (English spelling)
A device for fastening socks. There are those that are tied with strings, those that fasten with loops, and those that hang from the top and fasten with clips. They were often made of elastic material with rubber woven into them, but with the spread of synthetic fibers such as spandex (elastic fiber) and pantyhose, their use has gradually fallen out of use. The ribbon decoration below the knee seen on men's clothing in the 17th century, which first appeared with the use of socks, is also a type of garter.
