The Japanese era name (nengo). It was the era name of Emperor Murakami from 961 to 964 during the Heian period. The previous era name was Tentoku . The era name was Koho . The era name was changed on February 16, 961 (Tentoku 5). The era name was changed to put an end to the misfortune of a fire at the Imperial Palace, and because 961 was the year of the Xinyou ( Shin'yu ), which is said to be the year of a revolution in which the mandate of heaven changes (the year of a revolution in which the dynasty changes), the era name was changed to reflect the Xinyou Revolution. The name was taken from the Book of Jin . In 961 (Owa 1), Emperor Murakami moved to the newly constructed Imperial Palace. Source: Kodansha Encyclopedia of Japanese Era Names Information |
