America - America (English spelling)

A 170-ton schooner built in 1851 by George Steers for John Stevens, president of the New York Yacht Club. It was built for the purpose of participating in and winning a yacht race in British waters. On August 22nd of that year, the ship came first out of 16 yachts in a race around the Isle of Wight, and won the cup from the Royal Yacht Company. The New York Yacht Club then proposed an international race around the Isle of Wight for yachts of 30 to 300 tons. Since the first race in 1868, it has continued to this day, and the cup has become known as the America's Cup.

1851年にスティアーズGeorge Steersが、ニューヨーク・ヨットクラブ会長ジョン・スティーブンスJohn Stevensのために建造した170トンのスクーナー型ヨット。イギリス海域ヨットレースに参加して勝利を得る目的で建造された。同年8月22日にワイト島を巡るコースで行われたレースで、本船は参加16隻中の第1位となり、王室ヨット団からカップを獲得した。その後ニューヨーク・ヨットクラブが、このカップに挑戦する30トン以上300トン以下のヨットによるワイト島1周の国際レースを提唱した。1868年に第1回のレースが行われて以来、今日なお続いており、このカップがアメリカズ・カップAmerica's Cupとして知られるようになった。
