... Italo Svevo (a pen name meaning Italian-Swabian), who was the first to incorporate the unconscious and split consciousness into his novels, was a close friend of J. Joyce, his English tutor, and aimed to create a pan-European literature, whereas the poet Saba, who ran a second-hand bookshop in the center of Trieste, continued to depict the Trieste climate. The Triestine regionalist writers who belonged to Saba's lineage, led by Silvio Benco (1874-1949), were involved in the Irredentism movement (the movement to recover unclaimed land), and made patriotic spirit the basis of their works. Scipio Slataper (1888-1915), the Stuparich brothers Giani Stuparich (1894-1961) and Carlo S. (1894-1916) volunteered to fight on the Austrian front during World War I, and served in the defense of the Trieste hinterland. Two of them committed suicide before being killed in action or captured, but they left behind diaries and musings about the tense mental conditions they faced during the war, shocking the Italian literary world.
