… In the mid-19th century, artists began to paint the scenery and history of their own countries in the midst of the nationalist movement. Representative artists include Benczúr Gyula (1844-1920), who studied under K. von Piloty in Munich and produced a series of large historical paintings; Székely and Munkács, who tried new contemporary techniques in Paris but sought to express their own ethnic identity; László Paál (1846-79), who was drawn to the Barbizon School; and Pál Szinyei-Merse (1845-1920), who was likened to the Impressionists for his precise fixation of the divided brilliance of colors on the canvas. Following their success, artist colonies were formed in Nagybánya (now Baia-Mare) in northern Transylvania in 1896 and other places, and showed various aspects ranging from Post-Impressionism, Symbolism, Fauvism, and Expressionism. …
