A type of ancient Greek lyric poetry. It was sung by choirs to accompany dances at important public religious events, but in its heyday in the 6th century BC, tyrants and aristocrats in various regions also hired poets to sing for their private celebrations. In ancient times, the Dorian Spartans and the Aeolian island of Lesbos were the centers of poets, including Terpander, Alcman, and Arion, and at its height, Stesichorus of Sicily, Ibycus of southern Italy, Simonides and Bachylides of Ionia, and Pindar of Boeotia were active. The main types of plays were hymns, paian (songs to Apollo), hyporchēma (dance songs), partheneion (maiden songs), prosodion (procession songs), epithalamion (wedding songs), enkōmion (odes), thrēnos (elegies), dithyrambs, and epinikion (victory songs). Furthermore, choral singing was a part of the theatrical structure of Attic theatre, and so a chorus (koros) always appeared in tragedies and comedies.
