...the latter, hailed as the "Eighth Wonder of the World" for its extraordinary size, can be seen as a symbol of the prosperous Dutch civil society. Other classical architects were the Vingboons brothers and Steven Vennecool (1657-1719), and this tendency continued under French influence into the 18th century thanks to the energetic work of Daniel Marot (1663-1752), a Huguenot refugee (who fled in 1686).

After the 1670s, when Dutch national power began to decline due to the invasion of France by King Louis XIV and the Third Anglo-Dutch War (1672-74), painting, which had enjoyed its heyday, began to slowly but surely decline.
