Giuseppe Arcimboldo

Italian painter. Born in Milan, where he died. He started out working with his father Biagio as a sketch artist for stained glass at Milan Cathedral. In 1562, he went to Prague and served as a court painter for three emperors, Ferdinand I, Maximilian II, and Rudolf II, where he stayed until 1587, and in 1592 was awarded the title of count. He is known for his bizarre fantasy paintings "Summer," "Winter," "Water," and "Fire," which combine animals and plants to form a human head (Kunshitsuzuri Museum, Vienna). He was previously ignored as a painter with vulgar tastes, but he has been reevaluated with the rise of Surrealism.

イタリアの画家。ミラノに生まれ、同地で没した。初めは父ビアジオとともにミラノ大聖堂のステンドグラスの下絵職人として働いた。1562年プラハに赴き、フェルディナント1世、マクシミリアン2世、ルドルフ2世の3代に仕える宮廷画家として、1587年まで滞在し、1592年には伯爵位を贈られた。約20点の油彩画と多数の素描が残っているが、とくに動物や植物を組み合わせて人の頭部をかたどった怪奇な幻想画『夏』『冬』『水』『火』などで有名である（ウィーン美術史博物館）。従来、俗悪な趣味の画家として無視されていたが、シュルレアリスムの隆盛とともに再評価されるようになった。
