A city in northwestern Uttar Pradesh, northern India, about 155 km north of Delhi. Founded around 1340, the city's name comes from the Islamic saint Shah Haran. The surrounding area is a major sugar manufacturing center, with sugarcane cultivation thriving. It is also a timber distribution center, where lumber, woodworking, and papermaking are carried out, and there are railway-related factories. It is home to the National Botanical Garden, the Central Fruit Tree Research Institute, and two colleges of Agra University, and is a strategic location on the railway linking the north bank of the Ganges River with the state of Punjab.
