Gill heart (branchial heart)

Japanese: えら心臓(鰓心臓) - えらしんぞう（英語表記）branchial heart

It is an organ found only in cephalopod mollusks, located at the base of the gills that hang down into the mantle cavity, and pumps venous blood toward the afferent branchial veins by rhythmically contracting and expanding like the real heart (systemic heart).Therefore, there are as many gill hearts as there are real gills.Cephalopods are the most agile of all mollusks, and they require large amounts of oxygen, so the gill heart is a morphological adaptation to this, and is an organ that increases the pressure and speed of the cephalopod's circulating blood.

軟体動物頭足類にのみみられる器官で，外套（がいとう）腔mantle cavityに垂れ下がっているえらの基部にあって本ものの心臓(体心臓)同様に律動的に収縮拡大することによって入鰓（にゆうさい）血管afferent branchial veinに向かって静脈血を送りこむ。したがってえら心臓は本鰓の数と同数ある。軟体動物のうち最も敏しょうな運動を行う頭足類は多量の酸素を必要とするが，えら心臓はそれに対する形態適応で，頭足類の循環血液の圧力と速度を増すための器官である。
