Sawauchi [Village] - Sawauchi

Japanese: 沢内[村] - さわうち

A village in Waga County in the mid-west of Iwate Prefecture. Population 4,123 (1995). It borders Akita Prefecture to the west, separated by the Mahiru Mountains, and the Waga River, a tributary of the Kitakami River, flows south through the center. 80% of the village is forest, and it is one of the snowiest areas in the prefecture. The main industry is agriculture, and livestock farming is thriving, mainly for rice, which is sung about in the folk song "Sawauchi Jinku" as "the source of 3,000 koku of rice in Sawauchi." In recent years, field crops such as leaf tobacco and highland vegetables have also been growing. The Matagi hunting equipment and dugout canoe at Hekishoji Museum have been designated as Important Tangible Folk Cultural Properties.

岩手県中西部，和賀郡の村。人口4123(1995)。西は真昼山地を境に秋田県に接し，中央を北上川の支流和賀川が南流する。村域の8割が山林で，県内では最も雪の多い地域の一つである。主産業は農業で，民謡《沢内甚句》に〈沢内三千石お米の出どこ〉と歌われた米を中心に肉牛，乳牛の畜産も盛ん。近年，葉タバコや高冷地野菜などの畑作物も伸びている。碧祥寺博物館にあるマタギ狩猟用具と丸木舟は重要有形民俗文化財に指定されている。
