Begas, R. (English spelling)

...This can be seen in Johann Heinrich von Dannecker's (1758-1841) Bust of Schiller (1805-10), Gottfried Schadow's (1764-1850) Tombstone of Margrave Mark (1788-91), Christian Rauch's (1777-1857) Frederick the Great (1839-51), and Klinger's Beethoven (1899-1903), who was also known as a painter. After Reinhold Begas (1831-1911), who was influenced by the works of Michelangelo and Bernini, emerged in the mid-19th century, Hildebrand again established a strict classicist style, which had a lasting influence on later generations, mainly in Munich. However, even in the 20th century, sculpture did not experience a period of prosperity comparable to that of architecture or painting, and despite the emergence of such figures as Wilhelm Lehmbruck (1881-1919), Barlach, and Kollwitz, who were followers of Expressionism, it is difficult to say that sculpture has overcome its slump to this day.
