A biennial plant of the Brassicaceae family. It is a type of vegetable that is widely cultivated, especially in western Japan, and is classified as a variety of mustard. It is also called Ogarashi or Hagarashi, and is larger than the parent species, mustard, at around 1.2m in height, but in warmer regions it can reach up to 2m. Its withered stems have sometimes been used as hedges. The petioles and leaves are large and slightly purple, and are used as leafy vegetables in stews and pickles, and are not as spicy as mustard. アブラナ科の二年草。特に西日本で広く栽培される菜の一種で分類学上はカラシナの変種とされる。オオガラシ,ハガラシともいい,母種のカラシナに比べて大型で高さ 1.2m内外であるが,暖地で特に大きく育ったものは 2mにも及ぶ。その枯れた茎を垣根に用いたこともあった。葉柄と葉はやや紫色を帯びて大きく,葉菜として煮物や漬物用とし,カラシナほどの辛みはない。
