Okadaira Shell Mound at Hitachi

...Sasaki Chujiro and Iijima Kai, students of ES Morse who also participated in the survey of the Omori Shell Mound, discovered and excavated this shell mound in 1879 when they went to Lake Kasumigaura to survey freshwater shellfish, and it is famous as the first excavation by Japanese people. The results were published as Okadaira Shell Mound at Hitachi (1882), using the report format of the Omori Shell Mound as a model. The excavated pottery was called Rikuhei type/Atsute type (Middle Jomon period) due to its large size and thick construction, and its characteristics such as ridge patterns, and was quickly distinguished from the Omori type/Usute type (Late Jomon period) of the Omori Shell Mound.
