The results were published as Okadaira Shell Mound at Hitachi (1882), using the report format of the Omori Shell Mound as a model. The excavated pottery was called Rikuhei type/Atsute type (Middle Jomon period) due to its large size and thick construction, and its characteristics such as ridge patterns, and was quickly distinguished from the Omori type/Usute type (Late Jomon period) of the Omori Shell Mound.
