Mount Lamington is a highly eroded stratovolcano (1,780m above sea level) in the southeastern part of New Guinea, composed of amphibole andesite, with a U-shaped crater opening to the north at its summit. Mount Lamington was thought to be an extinct volcano, but in 1951 it erupted violently, with a volcanic collapse and pyroclastic flows, destroying forests and farmland within a 10km radius of the summit and killing 3,000 residents. A lava dome of amphibole andesite subsequently grew at the bottom of the crater, reaching a relative height of 560m the following year.
