Bromberg is the capital of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship in northern Poland. It is located on the Brda River, a tributary of the Wisla River, and the Bydgoszcz Canal. It was originally a fortress town of the Teutonic Knights, but in 1346 Casimir III the Great granted it city rights, and it became part of Prussia in 1772. It developed rapidly after the Bydgoszcz Canal was excavated in 1773, connecting it to the Odra River. It became part of Poland in 1920. After the right bank of the lower Odra River was annexed to Poland after World War II, it became the country's most important river port. It is also a major center of the mechanical engineering industry, and there are also large factories for chemicals, lumber, leather, and food processing. It is a key location for water, rail, and road transport linking Upper Silesia with the Baltic Sea ports. It is also a cultural and academic city with a university, theater, museum, opera company, and symphony orchestra. Population: 373,804 (2002).
