This is the former area of Ueda City in the central-southern part of eastern Nagano Prefecture. It is located on the eastern slope of the Chikuma Mountains and borders the southern part of the Ueda Basin. It was incorporated as a town in 1912. In 1954, Higashiuchi Village and Nishiuchi Village were incorporated, in 1955 Nagase Village and Yoda Village, and in 1956 Shiokawa Village were incorporated. In 2006, it was merged with Ueda City, Sanada Town, and Takeishi Village to form Ueda City. The place name comes from the estate of the Maruko clan, who held sway in this area. The central settlement, Maruko, is located at the mouth of the Yoda River, a tributary of the Chikuma River. It is known as the place where Minamoto no Yoshinaka raised his flag in the Middle Ages. The silk industry was thriving from the mid-Meiji period, but after World War II, industrialization progressed, centering on spinning, machinery, and metals. The rural areas focus on rice farming, but also on vegetable and floriculture. The Misaiyama Tunnel in the west leads to Matsumoto City. Maruko Onsen Village, which includes Reisenji Onsen and Kakeyu Onsen, is popular with visitors who come for hot spring treatments. There are Tobayama Cave (a nationally designated historic site) and Hojuji Temple (the Kokuzodo Hall is a nationally designated important cultural property), and the weeping Japanese hackberry trees in the eastern area and the weeping chestnut trees in the western area are both designated as national natural monuments. Part of the area belongs to the Yatsugatake Chushin Highlands Quasi-National Park.
