Founded in 1925 as Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, an aircraft engine manufacturer, the company became United Aircraft & Transport Corp. in 1928. With the enactment of the Air Mail Act in 1934, the transportation division was separated from the manufacturing division, and the manufacturing division was established in Delaware as United Aircraft Corp.
