ASP - Asp

A service that allows PC applications (software for specific tasks) to be used on a web browser via the Internet, rather than being installed on each individual local machine, or a business that provides such a service. Application Service Provider is an abbreviation for Application Service Provider. A form of cloud computing that reduces the cost and effort of installing and upgrading applications on individual PCs, significantly reducing the burden on information systems departments, especially in companies. Traditionally, it was aimed at large-scale business systems, but it is now possible to use everyday applications such as word processors and spreadsheets.

ASP began to be used in Europe and the US around 1998 and attracted attention, and many businesses entered the market in Japan as well, but its use never really took off due to the underdeveloped broadband environment and the lack of applications offered. After that, communication infrastructure developed and became cheaper, and around 2002, it started to attract attention again, and its market has expanded due to improvements in functionality and performance. It is often called SaaS (Software as a Service), but in reports by the industry group ASPIC (ASP, SaaS, Cloud Consortium) and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, ASP and SaaS are essentially the same thing, so they are sometimes written together as ASP and SaaS.

パソコン用のアプリケーション（特定の作業のためのソフトウェア）を、個々のローカルマシンにインストールするのではなく、インターネットを介してウェブブラウザ上で使用できるようにするサービス、もしくはそうしたサービスを提供する事業者のこと。アプリケーション・サービス・プロバイダーApplication Service Providerの略。クラウドコンピューティングの一形態で、個々のパソコンへのアプリケーションのインストールやアップグレードにかかる費用や手間が少なくなるため、とくに企業などにおいては情報システム部門の負担を大幅に軽減できる。従来は大規模な業務システムが対象であったが、ワープロや表計算など日常的に使われるアプリケーションも利用できるようになっている。

　ASPは1998年ごろから欧米で用いられるようになり注目を集め、日本でも多くの事業者が市場に参入したものの、ブロードバンド環境の未発達、提供されるアプリケーションの未整備などの理由から、本格的に利用が広がることはなかった。その後、通信インフラの発達と低廉化が進み、2002年ごろから、ふたたび注目されるようになり、機能面、性能面での向上もあって、その市場を拡大させている。SaaS(サース)（Software as a Service）とよばれることも多いが、業界団体であるASPIC(アスピック)（ASP・SaaS・クラウド コンソーシアム）と総務省による報告書などでは、ASPとSaaSを実質的に同一のものとして扱っているため、ASP・SaaSと併記されることもある。
