Kinkasan Island belongs to Oshika Town, Oshika District, Miyagi Prefecture (now Ishinomaki City), and lies to the southeast of the Oshika Peninsula, separated by the Kinkasan Strait. Its area is 9.92 km2 . Its highest point is Kinkasan (444m). It is made up of hanakou rocks, with sea cliffs developing along the coast. The entire mountain is covered with black pine trees, and is inhabited by deer and monkeys. It is said to have produced the gold donated in 749, and it appears as Kinkasan in "Oku no Hosomichi." On the western foot of Kinkasan is Koganeyama Shrine, an ancient shrine listed in the Engishiki, and a lighthouse at Awabiarezaki. Offshore is one of the country's leading fishing grounds.
