Ethyl cellulose

Japanese: エチルセルロース
Ethyl cellulose

A cellulose derivative in which the hydroxyl groups have been ethyl-etherified. Alkali cellulose is reacted with an ethylating agent such as diethyl sulfate or ethyl chloride, generally in a heterogeneous system. Properties such as solubility and softening temperature vary depending on the degree of substitution, which is expressed as the number of etherified hydroxyl groups out of the three per glucose unit. Cellulose with a low degree of substitution (0.8 or less) is soluble in alkali, while those with a degree of substitution of 0.8 to 1.3 are water-soluble. As the degree of substitution increases, it becomes soluble in polar solvents such as alcohol and non-polar solvents, and at a degree of substitution of 2.4 to 2.5 it becomes soluble in other types of solvents. Due to its excellent solubility in solvents, compatibility with other resins, stability, water resistance, and chemical resistance, it is widely used in paints, plastics, films, etc. [CAS 9004-57-3][See other terms]Cellulose derivatives
