Ayer was a British logician and philosopher. He was also known by the spelling Ayer. He was a professor at Oxford University. He was a representative of logical positivism in the UK. In his major works, Language, Truth and Logic (1936), The Foundations of Empirical Knowledge (1940), and Thought and Meaning (1947), he argued for the distinction between analytical and synthetic judgments, rejected traditional metaphysics, and addressed many modern themes, including perception, language, and the mind-body problem.
