Ctesiphon - Ctesiphon (English spelling)

The remains of an ancient city in Mesopotamia. It is currently part of the Republic of Iraq, located on the left bank of the Tigris River, about 40 km southeast of Baghdad. It became the winter capital of the Parthians around 129 BC, and developed into a political and military city for the Persians along with the Greek commercial city of Seleucia on the opposite bank. It was the capital throughout the Persian Sassanid Empire. From the Parthian period onwards, it was often invaded by the Roman army, and in 637 it was occupied and destroyed by the Arabs. It was excavated by the German Society for Oriental Studies from 1928 to 1932. All that remains today is the round-roofed brick Tak-i-Kisra (Arch of Khosrow), thought to be part of the palace of Khosrow I of the Sassanid Empire (reigned 531-579). It is a representative Sassanid building, 37 meters high, evoking the grandeur of the past.

メソポタミアの古代都市遺跡。現在イラク共和国に属し、バグダードの南東約40キロメートル、ティグリス川の左岸にある。紀元前129年ごろパルティアの冬の都となり、対岸のギリシア人の商業都市セレウキアとともに、ペルシア人の政治・軍事都市として発展した。ササン朝ペルシア時代は終始その首都であった。パルティア時代からしばしばローマ軍の侵略を受け、637年アラブ人に占領され破壊された。1928～32年ドイツ東洋学会が発掘した。現在残っているのは、ササン朝ホスロー1世（在位531～579）時代の宮殿の一部と思われる丸屋根・れんが製のターク・イ・キスラ（ホスローのアーチ）だけであるが、高さ37メートルあり、昔日の偉容をしのばせるササン朝の代表的建築物である。
