Sombrero (English spelling)

Sombrero (English spelling)
A broad-brimmed, high-topped hat worn by both men and women in Latin America. Some are made of woven straw or bark, and others are made of felt. They are generally in the natural colors of straw or bark, brown, white, black, or gray, and often have primary-colored trim or tassels. The word originally referred to a canopy, mushroom cap, or wide-brimmed hat in general, but in the 16th century, when Spain ruled Latin America, the hat unique to this region came to be called a sombrero, and has since become common. There are various styles and names depending on the region, with the most well-known being the charro in Mexico, the gaucho in Argentina, and the huasos in Chile. The cowboy hat (also called a tengallon hat) of western North America is a successor to this style.
