A decapod crustacean of the Palaemonidae family (illustration). An important cold-water species of edible shrimp. It is around 13 cm long and is found in abundance from Hokkaido to Sakhalin. It is often found in the eelgrass zone of shallow waters. When alive, it is dark green-brown with several pale yellow-white vertical stripes running along its side. It has a large rostrum with 13 to 18 movable spines on its upper edge (4 to 5 on the cephalothorax) and 10 to 15 immovable spines on its lower edge. The shape of the thoracic legs is similar to that of the Botan shrimp and Toyama shrimp, and it also undergoes proto-male sex change in the same way.
