Acanthus pattern - Acanthus pattern

A decorative motif that depicts the Acanthus, a thorny perennial plant that grows wild in the Mediterranean coastal region. It is said to have first been used in the 5th century BC by the Athenian sculptor Kallimachos to decorate the capitals of Corinthian architecture. The acanthus pattern has since been passed down as the basic form of capital decoration in European architecture, and is often used to decorate crafts. There are two styles: the Greek-style Acanthus spinosus, which has sharply pointed leaves, and the Roman-style Acanthus mollis, which has slightly rounded leaves.

地中海沿岸地方に野生するとげのある多年草の植物アカンサスAcanthusを図様化した装飾文。紀元前5世紀、アテネの彫刻家カリマコスKallimachosがコリント式建築の柱頭装飾に用いたのが始まりとされている。アカンサス文様はその後ヨーロッパ建築の柱頭装飾の基本形式として受け継がれたばかりか、しばしば工芸品の装飾にも用いられている。その様式には、葉先が鋭くとがったギリシア風のアカンサス・スピノサスAcanthus spinosusと、葉先がやや丸味を帯びたローマ風のアカンサス・モリスA. mollisの二様がある。
