When planting rice, water is poured into the tilled and crushed paddy field, the soil is stirred in the water to turn it into colloidal mud, and the surface of the field is leveled. The objectives are (1) to crush the soil to make it soft and to level the surface of the field to make rice planting easier, (2) to mix fertilizer, compost, etc. with the soil to create uniform soil conditions, and (3) to knead the soil on the plough bed (the surface through which the bottom of the plough passes when plowing; the area below this surface is not plowed) to prevent water leakage. Tilling is carried out every few days in the form of rough plowing, which mainly involves crushing the soil, middle plowing, which also involves crushing and leveling the soil, and planting, which mainly involves leveling.

水稲の作付けにあたって，耕起，砕土した水田に水を入れ，水の中で土をかくはんしてコロイド状の泥とし，田面を均平にする作業。目的は，(1)土を砕いて軟らかくし，かつ田面を平らにして田植作業を容易にする。(2)肥料，堆肥などを土と混和して均一な土壌条件を作る。(3)すき床(耕起の際すきの底の通過する面。この面から下は耕起されない)上で土を練って漏水を防止するなどである。代搔きは砕土を中心とする荒代（あらしろ），砕土均平を兼ねる中代（なかしろ），均平を中心とする植代（うえしろ）を数日おきに行う。
