An aromatic hydrocarbon. It is a flammable colorless liquid with a melting point of -94.98°C, a boiling point of 136.19°C, and a specific gravity of 0.866 (25°C). It is insoluble in water and mixes uniformly (dissolves) with most organic solvents. Along with benzene, toluene, and xylene, it is one of the major aromatic petrochemical products and a widespread and important primary chemical raw material. Industrially, it is mainly produced by alkylating benzene with ethylene using an acid catalyst (such as aluminum chloride in the liquid phase method, and phosphoric acid-carrier in the gas phase method).
