Nikkan - Nikkan

Japanese: 日観 - にっかん

A Chinese painter-monk from the late Song and early Yuan periods. Dates of birth and death unknown. Born in Songjiang, Jiangsu. His given name was Zi Wen, his pen name was Zhong Yan, and his pen name was Nikkan. He lived at the Agate Temple in Hangzhou, and in his later years he devoted himself to the teachings of the Pure Land, earning him the nickname Daoxing Gaozhuo. He excelled in cursive calligraphy, and was known for his ink-wash depictions of grapes, which he painted with unrestrained and free-flowing brushstrokes. He is highly regarded for expressing the spirit of his heart without being bound by form.

中国，宋末元初の画僧。生没年不詳。江蘇松江の人。諱(いみな)は子温，字は仲言，日観は号。杭州の瑪瑙(めのう)寺に住し，晩年は浄土の教えを専修して道行高卓といわれた。草書にすぐれ，奔放自在な筆致による水墨の葡萄(ぶどう)図を得意とした。形似に拘泥せず，胸中の逸気を表出した点で高く評価されている。
