…It has long held the first place as the representative of the Earth-centered universe (geocentric theory). The original title was Mathematical Syntaxis, but the adjective "megistē" (the greatest) given by later generations as a title of respect remained, and when it entered the Islamic world it was translated as almajistī (the first translation was said to be in the late 8th century, and later by Ibn Yusuf, Ishaq bin Hunayn, Thabit bin Qurra, and others). When it was introduced to the Latin world in the 12th century (the most famous one was by Gerard of Cremona (c. 1114-87) in 1175), the title was still the Latin Almagestum. …
