Mount Takamado

A mountain located east of Nara city. It is 432 meters above sea level. It is a granite mountain covered with scrub forest, and the Takamadoyama Driveway leads to the summit. The summit offers an excellent view. It is often mentioned in the Manyoshu, and it is said to be the site of Emperor Shomu's detached palace, Onoenomiya. On the middle slope on the west side is Takamadoyama Byakugoji Temple, a Shingon Ritsu temple known for its five-colored camellias and bush clovers.
