…In the 18th century, the number of clubs grew rapidly, reflecting the growing power of the citizens. Some clubs, known collectively as Mughouse Clubs, engaged in reckless behavior such as carousing, gambling, and even assaulting ordinary citizens. In 1764, the social club White's was renamed Almack's, which became a stronghold of the Tories and was known for its gambling (Almack's was the forerunner of today's Brook's). Other clubs established included the literary club Kit-Cat, Dr. Johnson's The Club, and Boodle's, which became famous for its cooking. …
