Masayoshi Ozaki

Japanese:
Masayoshi Ozaki
Year of death: 1827.11.21 (1827.10.3)
Year of birth: 1755
A scholar of Japanese classics in the mid-to-late Edo period. His pen name was Yuuyu. He was commonly known as Shunzo (Shunzo). His pen names were Rogetsu, Hakukochi Kondo, and Kayo. He was from Osaka. His father was said to have been a doctor, but the details are unclear. Masayoshi studied Confucianism under Okuda Mototsugu, and was listed as a Confucian scholar in the Naniwa Goyoroku, published in 1775 when he was 21 years old. However, his activities as a Confucian scholar ended around this time, and he gradually became known for his waka and Japanese classics. He started out with waka classifications such as Senshu Burui and Zoho Waka Myoda Burui, and eventually moved on to the Kokin Wakashu Hingen, a colloquial translation of the Kokin Wakashu. This series of works culminated in Hyakunin Isshu Itsukuwa (1833), which was published posthumously and widely enjoyed. Masayoshi's talents were best displayed in collecting and editing literary materials, rather than immersing himself in the interpretation of waka and classics. Gunsho Ichiran, which represents the Edo period in terms of both quantity and quality as a bibliographic commentary on Japanese books, received overwhelming acclaim and went through many reprints, while Zoku Isho Nihonden and Jibutsu Hakusai have been handed down in their original manuscript form, but the sheer scale of their works and the extensive research into materials make them worthy of being called the works of Masayoshi's lifetime. He is said to have also excelled in waka poetry, but there are few of his works. He had frequent acquaintances with Kamigata literary figures, and his relationship with Kimura Kenkado and the Kagawa Kageki school is noteworthy. It is regrettable that as a philologist he was limited to general knowledge, but his work will be of great benefit to future generations. <References> Suga Soji, "Ozaki Masayoshi Nenpu" (Aoyama Gobun, No. 12), and Gunsho Ichiran Kenkyu.
