According to the Homeric Hymn (late 7th century BCE), which tells the famous myth about her, when her daughter Persephone, born to Zeus, was kidnapped by Hades, king of the underworld, the mother goddess wandered the world in search of her daughter and came to Eleusis near Athens to become a wet nurse for the child of King Keleos. However, when she was caught throwing the baby into a fire to make the prince immortal, she was caught and revealed her true self in anger, ordering that a temple for herself be built in Eleusis and a ritual be held there, before leaving the palace. …
