Liquefied nitrogen. Its critical temperature is -147.2°C and critical pressure is 33.5 atm. It is obtained by fractional distillation of liquid air or by fractional liquefaction of air. The liquid is colorless and transparent, and has high fluidity. In addition to being used as a raw material for the traditional synthesis of ammonia, nitrogen has attracted attention for its properties such as inertness and being a low-temperature liquid, and demand for it as an atmospheric gas in the chemical, steel, and electronics industries is growing. It is also used as a safe refrigerating liquid in the food industry. [Kenichi Morinaga] [Reference item]Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
