Zhang Zhi (English name)

Japanese: 張芝 - ちょうし（英語表記）Zhang Zhi

A calligrapher from the Eastern Han Dynasty in China. His pen name was Boying. He was from Jiuquan (Gansu Province) and later moved to Hongnong (Henan Province). His father, Zhang Huan, rose to a high position in Taichang, but Zhang Huan never served in the government. He instead devoted himself to honing his calligraphy skills, and is famous for always studying in a pond, to the point where the water in the pond turned black. He learned calligraphy from Du Du and Cui Yan in cursive writing, and later completely revamped the style of cursive writing. He is also said to have excelled in one-stroke, flying white calligraphy. His acclaimed works include "Autumn Cool Peaceful Writings."

中国，後漢の書家。字は伯英。酒泉 (甘粛省) の人，のち弘農 (河南省) に移った。父の張渙は太常の高官に上ったが彼は終生仕官せず，書技の錬磨に努め，常に池にのぞんで書を学び，池水が黒くなったという逸事で名高い。書は杜度，崔えんに章草を学び，のち草書の体を一新した。また一筆飛白書にすぐれたといわれる。伝称作品には『秋凉平善帖』などがある。
