A town on the west coast of the Oshima Peninsula in Hiyama County, Hokkaido, and the location of the Hiyama Subprefectural Bureau. It was established as a port town early on, and was known as one of the three Ezo ports along with Hakodate and Matsumae. From the Edo period to the early Meiji period, it flourished as a base for herring fishing and a producer of cypress lumber, but now it engages in farming and fisheries such as the release of seedlings.
