Esashi [town] - Esashi

Japanese: 江差[町] - えさし

A town on the west coast of the Oshima Peninsula in Hiyama County, Hokkaido, and the location of the Hiyama Subprefectural Bureau. It was established as a port town early on, and was known as one of the three Ezo ports along with Hakodate and Matsumae. From the Edo period to the early Meiji period, it flourished as a base for herring fishing and a producer of cypress lumber, but now it engages in farming and fisheries such as the release of seedlings. It is the birthplace of Esashi Oiwake, and is home to a natural habitat of Hinoki Asunaro and Aotodomatsu (natural monuments), as well as Keiki Onsen. 109.53 ^km2 . 9,004 people (2010).

北海道檜山郡，渡島(おしま)半島西岸の町で，檜山振興局所在地。早くから港町が開け，函館，松前とともに蝦夷(えぞ)三湊といわれた。江戸時代から明治の初期まで，ニシン漁業の基地，ヒノキ材の産地として栄えたが，現在は種苗放流などの栽培漁業，農業を行う。江差追分の発祥地で，ヒノキアスナロおよびアオトドマツ自生地（天然記念物），慶喜(けいき)温泉がある。109.53km²。9004人（2010）。
