…Born into a family of scholars, his father was the famous criminal law scholar P.A. von Feuerbach. After studying under Hegel at the University of Berlin and becoming deeply devoted to him, he became a private lecturer at the University of Erlangen. However, he lost his job after publishing a critical essay on Christianity, “Reflections on Death and Immortality” (1830), and thereafter continued to lecture in the city. In his major work, “The Essence of Christianity” (1841), he argued that while humans are finite, imperfect, and powerless as individuals, they are infinite in their “general essence,” which is their reason, will, and love.
