An old city in the central south of Iwate Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1958. Iwayado, the city's center, is located in the Kitakami Basin, and buses run from Mizusawa Station on the Tohoku Main Line or Mizusawa-Esashi Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen. The Kitakami River coast produces rice, apples, and hops. The eastern slopes have long been a horse-breeding area, but now dairy farming is thriving and dairy products are produced. As companies are being attracted to the Esashi Core Industrial Park, production of Iwayado chests, which have been designated as a traditional craft, is also on the rise. In February 2006, it merged with Mizusawa City, Maesawa Town in Isawa County, Isawa Town, and Kinugawa Village to form Oshu City. 362.50 km2 . Population: 33,985 (2003).
