A reading book from the late Edo period. Written by Santo Kyoden and illustrated by Utagawa Toyokuni. Published by Edo Nishimura Soshichi in 1806 (Bunka 3). During the time of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa, in the Yamato Province Sadakuni family, the concubine Kumode no Kata tried to have her son Hanagatamaru take over as head of the family, and was supported by the wicked minister Fuwa Banzaemon and the evil ascetic Raigoin, but the loyal ministers Nagoya Sansaburo and Umezu Kamon, who were protecting Sadakuni's eldest son Katsuranosuke and his son Tsukiwakamaru, destroyed them. Based on Chikamatsu Monzaemon's joruri "Keisei Hangonkou," "Meiboku Sendaihagi," and "Date Kurabe Okuni Kabuki," the work skillfully transforms the highlights of joruri and kabuki, such as the sandal-making and scabbard-wearing scenes. It also includes research on the customs, legends, paintings, and folk songs of the early modern period in the Kyoden. Many stories are intricately intertwined, making it difficult to follow the story, but it is a work that represents the pinnacle of the Kyoden reader series.

江戸後期の読本(よみほん)。山東京伝(さんとうきょうでん)作、歌川豊国(とよくに)画。1806年（文化3）江戸西村宗七等刊。足利義政(あしかがよしまさ)将軍のころ、大和(やまと)国佐々木貞国(さだくに)家では、妾(めかけ)の蜘手(くもで)の方(かた)が子の花形丸に家督をとらせようとし、それを奸臣(かんしん)不破伴左衛門(ふわばんざえもん)、悪修験(しゅげん)者頼豪院(らいごういん)らが後押しするが、貞国の嫡子桂之助(かつらのすけ)とその子月若丸を守る忠臣名古屋山三郎、梅津嘉門(うめつかもん)らはこれを滅ぼす。近松門左衛門の浄瑠璃(じょうるり)『傾城反魂香(けいせいはんごんこう)』や『伽羅先代萩(めいぼくせんだいはぎ)』『伊達競阿国戯場(だてくらべおくにかぶき)』を踏まえ、浄瑠璃、歌舞伎(かぶき)の草履打(ぞうりうち)・鞘当(さやあて)の見せ場を巧みに転化する。また、京伝の近世初期風俗、伝説、絵画、歌謡に関する考証が付会される。多くの説話が複雑に交錯して、筋がつかみにくいきらいもあるが、京伝読本の頂点をなす作品であろう。
