An old town in Mima County in northern Tokushima Prefecture. It occupies the southern slope of the Sanuki Mountains and the northern bank of the midstream Yoshino River. The main settlement, Wakimachi, is located on the alluvial fan of the Soedani River and developed as a castle town. It has long been a key transportation hub, and is a central bus transportation center. Fruit and vegetable cultivation is the main business, and in recent years commerce and industry have flourished. In March 2005, it merged with Mima Town, Anabuki Town, and Kiyadaira Village in Mima County to become a city. Area: 111.09 km2 . Population: 17,882 (2003). 徳島県北部,美馬(みま)郡の旧町。讃岐(さぬき)山脈の南斜面,吉野川中流北岸を占める。主集落の脇町は曾江谷川の扇状地上にあって,城下町として発達。古くから交通の要地で,バス交通の一中心。果樹・野菜栽培を行い,近年は商工業が盛ん。2005年3月美馬郡美馬町,穴吹町,木屋平村と合併し市制,美馬市となる。111.09km2。1万7882人(2003)。
